Springfield Pulls Away For 6-1 NEWMAC Win Over Wellesley Field Hockey

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley College field hockey dropped a 6-1 setback against Springfield College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon at the Wellesley Fields Complex.

Wellesley is now 4-9 overall and 1-5 in NEWMAC play. Springfield improves to 9-5 on the season and 3-2 in conference action.

First year Kyra Ashe (Longmeadow, Mass.) led Springfield with two goals. Senior Emily Knobel (North Attleboro, Mass.), first year Holly Rivers (Danbury, Conn.), junior Taylor Conley (Yarmouth Port, Mass.), and sophomore Kirsten Oliver (Vernon Center, N.Y.) also added goals for Springfield, while senior Amanda Nusbaum (Conway, N.H.) finished with a pair of assists. Wellesley senior Haley Chrobock (Branchville, N.J.) scored the lone goal for the Blue in the setback.

Ashe scored first for Springfield at 21:02 to give the Pride a 1-0 lead. Knobel followed scoring on a penalty corner at the end of the half to send the Blue into the break with a two-goal deficit. 

Chrobock tallied her fifth goal of the season at 37:32, finishing on a feed from sophomore Hannah Maisano (Gambrills, Md.) to cut the Springfield lead to 2-1. However, the Pride responded with four unasnwered goals to take a commanding 6-1 victory. Rivers finished on a feed from Nusbaum at 38:15 to make the score 3-1. Conley then scored her team-leaing 17th of the season at 39:34, before Ashe used a feed from Rivers to make the score 5-1 at 41:29. Oliver closed out the scoring with her second of the year at 68:50.  

Wellesley senior goalkeeper Maggie Connelly (Duxbury, Mass.) made six saves in the setback and is now 3-7 on the season. Springfield senior goalkeeper Emmalie Drake (Pittsford, N.Y.) made nine saves and is 6-3 on the season.

Both teams will play on Tuesday, October 16. Wellesley will host MIT at 4:00 PM and Springfield will travel to Clark University for a 7:00 PM start.
