Wellesley Field Hockey Blanks Smith, 3-0, for first NEWMAC Win

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Junior Carson Dennis (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) had a goal and an assist as Wellesley College field hockey blanked Smith College, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup at Butler Stadium.

Dennis, sophomore Julia Rappaport (Bala Cynwyd, Pa.), and first year Amy Kate Williams (Greenville, S.C.) each scored to lead the Blue (5-4 overall) to the team's first NEWMAC win of the year (1-1). Smith now sits at 2-6 (1-1 NEWMAC) on the season.

Dennis sent one into the back of the cage at 18:38 of the second to start off the scoring for the Blue. After Smith outshot the Blue, 4-0, in the opening period, the Blue countered by outshooting the guests, 9-0, in the second before Dennis eventually broke through for Wellesley. The Blue held on to the 1-0 lead at the break.

Senior Hannah Maisano (Gambrills, Md.) started off the third ripping a shot right into the pads of Smith goalkeeper sophomore Channy Cornell (Arlington, Tex.). However, Rappaport was there for the rebound, sending in the second goal of the game for Wellelsey at 38:35 of the third. The Blue added in the third and final goal just minutes before the end of regulation, as Williams redirected a pass from Dennis into the cage to seal the game at 57:26.

Wellesley finished the game with an 18-7 advantage in shots and an 8-6 edge in penalty corners. Smith's Cornell (2-6) finished the contest with an impressive 10 saves on 13 shots, while Wellesley junior goalkeeper Janelle Sullivan (Philadelphia, Pa.) shut down three attempts in the shutout win (5-4)

Wellesley will travel to Clark next Saturday, October 5, for an 11:00 AM NEWMAC game. Smith will host Simmons in non-conference play on Tuesday, October 1 at 6:30 PM.
