Wellesley Field Hockey Tops Framingham St., 5-0

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College field hockey opened the 2022 season with a 5-0 victory over Framingham St. on Thursday evening at Butler Stadium. Five different Wellesley players scored as the Blue won its season opener for the 13th consecutive season.

Wellesley (1-0 overall) started the scoring with a pair of first quarter goals. Sophomore Rose Weseley (New York, N.Y.) notched her first of the season on a penalty corner blast from the top of the circle just 1:36 into the contest. The Blue made it 2-0 at 12:21 of the first when junior Cassidy Novello (Scotch Plains, N.J.) finished on a feed from sophomore Penny Juarez (Los Angeles, Calif.).

Wellesley carried the 2-0 lead until the fourth quarter where a three-goal surge put the contest away. Senior Keller Gardner (Falmouth, Maine), who also set-up the first Wellesley goal, scored her first of the season by redirecting a drive from first year Ceci Miller (Lewiston, Maine ) 3:11 into the frame. The assist was the first point of Miller's collegiate career.

The Blue then scored two goals in the final minute of the contest. Senior Lindsay Strong (Concord, Mass.) powered home a shot from the top of the circle on a Wellesley corner to make the score 4-0 with 36 seconds to play. Junior River Schiff (Potomac, Md.) added the final Wellesley goal with two seconds left on the clock. Schiff finished the contest with a goal and an assist for the Blue.

Framingham St. (0-1) finished the contest with just three shots on goal. First year Angelina Barrett (Braintree, MA) made five saves in her collegiate debut for the Rams. In the Wellesley cage, junior Kyra Deehr-Lewis (Newtown, Pa.) turned aside three shots to earn the shutout.

Wellesley returns to action on Saturday at Husson. Game time is 6:00 PM. Framingham St. will host Regis (Mass.) in its next game on Tuesday, September 6, at 4:00 PM.
