WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Wellesley College Softball team took one of two at Emerson in the final road doubleheader of the season.

The Blue move to 4-25 overall and 3-13 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play. The Lions are now 16-18 overall and 3-13 in the conference.

Game 1 | Emerson 4, Wellesley 1 | Final

Emerson starting pitcher Emerson Gomez (West Chester, Penn.) went the distance and struck out seven batters in the win. The first year also finished 1-for-3 at the plate and drove in a run.

After a pair of scoreless innings to begin game one, senior Lexi Semanchik (Flemington, N.J.) singled through the left side and brought home the first Lion run. Claire Overton (Wayne, Penn.) followed up with a huge double to right field and drove home two more runs to give Emerson a 3-0 lead. Senior Holly Chin (Newton, Mass.) led off the top of the fourth with a double but the Blue were unable to bring her home and left two on base.

The Lions added a fourth run in the bottom of the sixth after Gomez was able to help herself with an RBI double to score Sam Zannotti (Dudley, Mass.). With one out in the seventh, junior Marisa Sgambati (Scottsdale, Ariz.) blasted her first career home run to left field. The solo shot cut the Emerson lead to 4-1. Gomez was able to get a strike out and a groundout to secure the Lion victory. First year Lauren Young (Fresno, Calif.) dealt six innings with just two earned runs and struck out six.

Game 2 | Wellesley 5, Emerson 2 | Final

The Blue bounced back in game two with eight hits as a team and senior Hayley Moniz (Westfield, Mass.) tossed a complete game and allowed just one earned run. Junior Hannah Cain (McKinney, Texas) powered the offense going 2-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs.

The Blue found itself in a deficit for the second game as Overton singled up the middle to score a run in the first. The lead would not last for long as Cain recorded her first RBI of the game in the following frame with a base knock and brought home Young. Overton remained hot at the plate and regained the Emerson lead in the third with a base hit to left field.

Wellesley was able to take control of the game in the fifth inning after senior Marisa Hensch (Carlsbad, Calif.) led off with a triple. She then made her way home one two batters later after scoring on a wild pitch to tie the game at 2-2. Junior Ingrid Hsu (San Ramon, Calif.) then laced a triple to get into scoring position. Moniz got the job done with a sacrifice fly and gave the Blue a 3-2 lead. The Blue added another in the sixth after Cain doubled to score Aniko Alexander (Gaithersburg, Md.). Alexander was able to add a fifth run in the final frame with an RBI single to score Juz Vargas (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Moniz worked out of a seventh inning jam to give Wellesley a 5-2 win.

The Blue host its final pair of games tomorrow afternoon against WPI. Emerson will host two more tomorrow with Smith starting at 12:00 PM.
