Blue Softball Comes Back to Win Game Two Against Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Wellesley College softball staged a comeback in game two to split a NEWMAC doubleheader with Springfield College at Potter Field on Saturday.

A key sixth-inning two-run single up the middle from first year Alena Mulhern (Kingston, Mass.) gave the Blue (10-8 Overall, 3-3 NEWMAC) a come from behind 4-3 victory in game two.

First year Amelia DeRosa (Miller Place, N.Y.) pitched a complete game shutout with a trio of strikeouts in game one for the Pride (16-3-1 Overall, 5-1 NEWMAC).

The Pride supported DeRosa's performance with seven hits and claimed a 5-0 win. 

Springfield threw three runs on the scoreboard in the second inning. A throwing error gave the team its first two runs of the game. DeRosa added a third run in the inning with an infield single.

The Pride strung together two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 5-0. Senior Lucy Puskas (Roxbury, Conn.) drove in a run with a single through the left side. Puskas later came home on a single down the left line by classmate Breannah McCann (Poway, Calif.). 

Despite stringing together seven hits, Wellesley was unable to bring any runners home. First year Sarah Wicker (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) struck out three for the Blue over six innings in the circle.

Mulhern's single helped solidify a comeback victory for Wellesley in game two.

The Pride took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Senior Ava Rainone (White Plains, N.Y.) came home on a grounder from DeRosa.

Both teams added two runs in the fourth inning. In the top half of the frame, a single from Wellesley first year Anisa Rodriguez (La Quinta, Calif.) allowed classmate Jillian Colgan (Las Vegas, Nev.) to come home. Rodriguez later scored when junior Charis Chung (San Gabriel, Calif.) hit into a fielder's choice. The Pride responded in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run single through the left side from Rainone. 

Wellesley took a 4-3 lead in the top half of the sixth. Mulhern's single scored sophomores Emeline Gaunce (Los Altos, Calif.) and Andrea Delgado (Miami, Fla.).

Colgan shut the door on Springfield with a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh. She picked up a complete-game win for the Blue and struck out two while only allowing two earned runs.

Wellesley returns home to host Brandeis at 3 & 5 PM on Wednesday, April 10. That doubleheader will be part of Earn The W Day. The Pride play at WPI on Wednesday, April 10 at 3:30 & 5:30 PM.
