Wellesley Fencing Sweeps Season-Opening LIU Invitational

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Wellesley College fencing opened the 2019-20 season with a perfect 6-0 day on Sunday at the LIU Invitational. 

A trio of Blue first years excelled in their collegiate debuts. Alexia Gilioli (New York, N.Y.) paced the foil squad with a 13-1 record, while Kimberley Kimura (Los Angeles, Calif.) was 13-1 in epee, and Brooke Dodrill (Boca Raton, Fla.) finished 13-4 in sabre. Senior Brie Maurer (Fredericksburg, Va.) added a 12-3 mark in foil, while junior Julia Calventus-Coveney (Barcelona, Spain) finished with a 12-2 mark in epee and junior Lauren Park (Wayne, N.J.) posted a 13-4 mark in sabre. 

Wellesley 27, Hunter 0

The Blue opened with a 27-0 sweep of Hunter. Eleven different Blue fencers earned bout victories against Hunter, with Park, Dodrill, Sam Wolstenholme-Britt (Cary, N.C.), Panya Tang (Toronto, Ontario, Canada), Sarah Pardo, Lucille Tsao (Succasunna, N.J.), Hanamei Shao (Vandenberg AFB, Calif.) all posting 3-0 records. 

Wellesley 21, Fairleigh Dickinson 6

Wellesley continued to roll against FDU, as a 9-0 sweep in sabre and a 7-2 win in foil helped the team secure a 21-6 win. Gilioli posted the first of three 3-0 rounds in foil, while Dodrill, Park, and Yasemin Ersen (Newton, Mass.) all finished 3-0 in sabre. 

Wellesley 23, Wagner 4

The Blue moved to 3-0 with a 23-4 win over Wagner. Gilioli and Maurer each finished 3-0 in foil, while Calventus-Coveney and Kimura posted 3-0 marks in epee and Park was a perfect 3-0 in sabre for the third straight round. 

Wellesley 15, NJIT 12

In the team's closest match of the day, the Blue shook off a 7-2 defeat in sabre to take a 15-12 win over NJIT. Wellesley earned a 7-2 win in epee coupled with a 6-3 win in foil to clinch the victory. First year Isabella Stewart (Scarsdale, N.Y.) clinched the win when she earned the fifth victory in foil. 

Wellesley 21, Drew 6

The Blue closed out the day with back-to-back lopsided victories, beginning with a 21-6 win over Drew. Maurer finished 3-0 in foil, while Calventus-Coveney and Kimura were both 3-0 in epee to lead Wellesley. 

Wellesley 22, LIU 5

Maurer posted her third 3-0 round to help the Blue clinch a 6-0 record with a 22-5 victory over the host Sharks. Dodrill was also 3-0 in sabre to finish off her 13-4 record. 

Wellesley continues the season on Sunday, November 10, at the Vassar Invitational.
