Wellesley Fencing Goes 3-3 at LIU Invitational

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Wellesley College fencing opened the 2021-22 season with six matches and went 3-3 on Sunday at the LIU Invitational. 

The foil squad set the tone for the Blue, with Nerine Uyanik (San Jose, Calif.) going a perfect 9-0 on the day. Junior Sejal Saxena (Chappaqua, N.Y.), first year Samantha Renton (Rockville, Md.), and first year Ella Boodell (Edgemont, N.Y.) each went 8-1 in their foil matches. Senior Sam Wolstenholme-Britt (Cary, N.C.) went 7-5 against four different schools in epee. Competing against five different schools was Brooke Dodrill (Boca Raton, Fla.) who finished the day at 9-5 in sabre.

Wellesley 26, Yeshiva 1

The Blue opened with a dominant 26-1 victory over Yeshiva University. Saxena, Renton, and Uyanik all went a perfect 3-0 to begin the day. In the sabre competition, Makana Burch (Portland, Ore.), Leena Hobson (Oakland, Calif.), and Candice Xie (Jiangsu, China) all swept the board. Finally, Wolstenholme-Britt and Elena Vona (Millstone, N.J.) both went 3-0 and Clara Brotzen-Smith (Houston, Texas) went 2-1 to complete the victory for Wellesley.

Wellesley 13, LIU 14

Wellesley started hot against LIU with the team picking up a 6-3 victory in foil, including a 3-0 sweep from Boodell. The Blue were set back in sabre losing 6-3 and lost a tight 5-4 epee match. Kimberley Kimura (Los Angeles, Calif.) went a solid 2-1 in epee.

Wellesley 13, Stevens 14

Following the close defeat, Vona kept the Blue in epee going 2-1 versus Stevens. After a tough 8-1 defeat in sabre, the foil squad bounced back to win 8-1 including 3-0 sweeps by Edith Po (Bernardsville, N.J.) and Alexia Gilioli (New York, N.Y.). 

Wellesley 13, NJIT 14

The Blue would fall just short again to NJIT. Foil was led by Gilioli and Boodell both going 3-0. Dodrill and Burch both went 2-1 in sabre to capture a 5-4 win, but epee struggled and dropped its match 8-1.

Wellesley 14, Drew 13

Wellesley would capture its second win of the way in a one point victory over Drew. Foil set the tone right away with a 8-1 win and a 3-0 sweep by Saxena and Uyanik once again. Kimura and Panya Tang (Toronto, Ontario) each picked up a win for epee and Dodrill carried in sabre going 3-0.

Wellesley 18, Wagner 9

The final match of the day was handled comfortably by the Blue. Renton and Uyanik continued their dominance and both went 3-0 in foil.Sabre lost just 5-4, but epee had a solid match winning 6-3 as a team and got a 3-0 performance from Wolstenholme-Britt. 

The Blue will pick back up on Sunday, November 7 at Drew University starting at 9:00 AM.
