Blue Fencing Goes 1-4 at Brandeis Invitational
WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Blue fencing team finished 1-4 at the Brandeis Invitational on Sunday. The Blue picked up a victory against Incarnate Word in the fourth match.
Junior Brooke Dodrill (Boca Raton, Fla.) had a winning record at 9-6 to pace the sabre team. For foil, first year Samantha Renton (Rockville, Md.) went .500 at 4-4, as her overall record is now 38-8. Junior Kimberley Kimura (Los Angeles, Calif.) led the way for epee with five total wins.
Wellesley 11, Brown 16
The Blue dropped a close matchup with Brown to begin the day. The foil squad earned a 5-4 victory as a unit, with Renton and Alexia Gilioli (New York, N.Y.) both going 2-1. Dodrill went 2-1 for sabre but the team fell 5-4 and epee lost 7-2.
Wellesley 1, Cornell 26
Sophomore Edith Po (Bernardsville, N.J.) picked up the lone win for foil in the team's loss to Cornell.
Wellesley 8, Boston College 19
The Blue fell to Boston College in the third match, but Dodrill found success going a perfect 3-0. First year foil member Ella Boodell (Edgemont, N.Y.) also had a solid round going 2-1.
Wellesley 17, Incarnate Word 10
The first win of the Brandeis Invitational came in the fourth round against Incarnate Word. Both sabre and foil went 6-3, including a 3-0 performance from Dodrill and 2-1 records by Yasemin Ersen (Newton, Mass.), Renton, Nerine Uyanik (San Jose, Calif.), and Sejal Saxena (Chappaqua, N.Y.). Epee picked up a 5-4 victory with 2-1 efforts by Sam Wolstenholme-Britt (Cary, N.C.) and Kimura.
Wellesley 8, Yale 19
Wellesley dropped the final match of the day to Yale University. Ersen was the lone Blue with a winning record, going 2-1 for sabre.
The Blue next compete in the 2022 calendar year, as the team will head to the University of California San Diego on January 20.
