Blue Fencing Takes Third at the NEIFC Championships on Saturday

WALTHAM, Mass. - Wellesley College fencing took third place in the three-weapon women's team championship on Saturday at the 2022 NEIFC Championships at Vassar College's Walker Fieldhouse.

Saturday's NEIFC Championships crowned team, squad and individual champions in foil, epee, and sabre, with team competition beginning in squad round robins before an elimination round that included a round robin pool and bracket determined the individual champion in each weapon.

The Blue took second overall in the foil squad finals and fifth in sabre and fourth in epee. Junior Kimberley Kimura (Los Angeles, Calif.) earned the bronze medal with a third place finish overall for the epee squad. The top finisher in foil was sophomore Edith Po (Bernardsville, N.J.) who finished in eighth place to earn a medal. Junior Hunter Dodrill (Boca Raton, Fla.) took 10th place for the Blue in sabre. 

Epee

Wellesley finished with 29 victories in 40 bouts and a +61 touch ratio in the Epee team round to place fourth. Kimura won 10 of 13 bouts (+16) to take third place in pool A and senior Sam Wolstenholme-Britt (Cary, N.C.) finished fifth overall to capture a medal and won the B pool with 12 victories in 14 bouts (+36). First year Elena Vona (Millstone, N.J.) placed sixth in the C pool with seven wins in 13 bouts (+9).

Kimura and Wolstenholme-Britt both advanced to the individual knockout stage for the Blue. Kimuara made it to the semi-finals before being eliminated 15-14 and finished for a tie for third in the overall epee standings. Wolstenholme-Britt earned the #1 seed in the stage, but fell in the first round by a score of 12-11.

Foil

The Blue took second in the foil team standings with a 35-5 record (+120 touch ratio). Gilioli was the top fencer in Pool A with 11 wins in 14 bouts (+33) and finished in ninth place overall. Sophomore Edith Po (Bernardsville, N.J.) placed third in Pool B with a record of 12-2 (+37) to advance to the knockout round and first year Ella Boodell (Edgemont, N.Y.) took first place in Pool C with a perfect 12-0 record (+50). Po took eighth place in the final results after falling in the knockout stage and Boodell was just behind with an overall 10th place finish. 

Sabre

Wellesley finished in fifth place in the sabre team standings, earning 28 wins in 39 bouts and a +75 touch ratio. Dodrill earned nine victories in 14 bouts and a +15 ratio in the A Pool. Senior Yasemin Ersen (Newton, Mass.) placed fourth in the B Pool with 11 victories in 14 bouts (+37). To close out, first year Makana Burch (Portland, Ore.) was fourth in the C Pool with a record of 8-3 and +23 touch ratio.
