Division I UCSD Wins Both Rounds Against Blue Fencing
LA JOLLA, Calif. - Wellesley College fencing lost both rounds against Division I University of California San Diego on Thursday morning in the Golden State.
Despite the losses, Wellesley fought hard against the Division I Tritons, with epee squad winning their first round and first year Grace Xu (Toronto, Ontario) going a perfect 5-0 on the day. In addition to Xu, senior Kimberly Kimura (Los Angeles, Calif.) won three matches in her home state. Senior Sejal Saxena (Chappaqua, N.Y.) and junior Edith Po (Bernardsville, N.J.) each earned three wins for a foil team that narrowly lost both rounds.
UCSD 16, Wellesley 11
Led by a 3-0 performance from Xu and two wins from Kimura, epee defeated their Division I foe. Foil narrowly lost 5-4 behind two wins from Saxena, and a win from both Po and first year Gina Huang (Taipei, Taiwan). Senior Hunter Dodrill (Boca Raton, Fla.) and sophomore Makana Burch (Portland, Ore.) both grabbed a win for sabre.
UCSD 21, Wellesley 6
Po took two matches while Saxena earned a win in foil. Xu won both of her epee matches and Kimura added a third point for epee while UCSD swept the sabre competition.
The Blue return home to the East Coast to host Brandeis in a dual meet at 6:00 PM next Tuesday evening.
