Wellesley Lacrosse Tops Lasell, 14-10

NEWTON, Mass. -- The Wellesley College lacrosse team picked up a 14-10 victory on the road at nearby Lasell College on Saturday afternoon at Grellier Field. The win lifts the Blue to 1-2 overall, while Lasell also moves to 1-2 on the season.

Wellesley was led offensively by four goals each from first-year Nikki Sharkin and senior Brit Mscisz, with Mscisz also adding an assist. Junior Claire Canty netted two goals and two assists for the Blue, while also grabbing a game-high nine draw controls. Rounding out the scoring for Wellesley, sophomore Chesley Hooker scored twice, while junior Meghan Peterson and first-year Courtney Peterson added solo goals.

Elsewhere for Wellesley, Meghan Peterson picked up four draw controls, while Mscisz and first-year Wendy Nettleton led the the Blue with three ground balls. Nettleton picked up the win in goal for Wellesley, making nine saves for her first career victory.

For Lasell, Caitlyn Brecher scored a game-high five goals for Lasell and Britney Wuorio notched a pair of goals and four assists. Bridget Doherty added a goal and an assist for the Lasers while Lisi Anczok and Toni Minnelli each scored one in the game. Alexa Katsigianis made 13 saves for the Lasers while taking the loss in goal.

Wellesley opened the scoring with a pair of free position shots in the opening five minutes from Meghan Peterson and Sharkey to take a 2-0 lead. Lasell's Minelli scored on a pass from Wuorio and then Wuorio converted a free position shot tying the game at 2-2 with 21:11 on the clock. 

Lasell went in front 3-2 when Anczok converted a feed from Wuorio, but three straight from Wellesley gave the visitors a 5-3 lead with just over 13 minutes remaining. Lasell's Brecher scored her first of the game to cut the hosts' deficit to 5-4, but Wellesley closed the half with three straight scores to take an 8-4 lead into intermission.

Opening the second half, Wellesley scored of the stanza's first three goals, as tallies from Hooker and Mscisz for the Blue and a Brecher score for Lasell set the score to 10-5 Wellesley with 21:19 to play. The teams then traded goals, with Mscisz scoring for Wellesley and Wuorio hitting for Lasell to make it 10-6 at 13:52. 

A Blue score from Sharkin increased Wellesley's lead to 11-6 with 11:14 on the clock, but Lasell answered back with three straight, including a pair from Brecher to cut the lead to two (11-9) with just over five to play. Wellesley responded with three out of the game's final four goals, including a pair from Mscisz to seal the 14-10 victory. 

Up next, Wellesley will host Plymouth State on Wednesday March 12th
 at 4:00 p.m., while Lasell also plays on Wednesday, traveling to Bridgewater State for a 4:00pm start.
