Wellesley Lacrosse Routs Emerson In Season Finale, 25-5

BOSTON, Mass. – First year Eleanor Mallett (Berwick, Maine) scored six goals and dished out five assists to lead Wellesley College lacrosse to a 25-5 victory over Emerson College in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Wednesday afternoon at Rotch Field.

Wellesley ends the 2019 season with a 5-10 overall record and a 2-6 mark in the NEWMAC. Emerson is still winless (0-11, 0-7 NEWMAC) with one game left to play in 2019.

Mallett finished the contest with a game-high eleven points, capping a standout rookie season with her top offensive performance of the year. Senior Dacia Persky (Las Vegas, Nev.) scored five goals and recorded two assists to finish the year with a career-high 64 goals and 80 points. Senior Ellie Chalphin (Philadelphia, Pa.) and sophomore Carson Dennis (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) each had a hat trick and an assist, while senior Lena Engbretson (Beaverton, Ore.), junior Marika Dy (San Mateo, Calif.), and first year Izzy Burdick (Scarborough, Maine) each recorded two goals and an assist. Senior Mariana Hernandez (Orlando, Fla.) had five ground balls to lead the Blue. 

Junior Jenna Tomsky (Clinton, N.J.) and sophomore Kelli Mark (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) each scored a pair of goals to lead Emerson. Sophomore Lily Nelson had the other Emerson goal and junior Camille Mumford (Yardley, Pa.) had two assists. Senior Jen Litchfield (Westborough, Mass.) scooped-up six ground balls to lead all players. In goal, first year Elizabeth Fretz (Falls Church, Va.) made 12 saves on 25 Wellesley shots on target. 

Mallett scored early and often in the first half, recording a point on the first seven Wellesley goals of the game to help the Blue take a 7-3 lead at the 12:33 mark. Persky added a free position goal to increase the Wellesley lead to 8-3 at 11:13. Mark netted her second of the first half for Emerson at 10:55 to snap a 5-0 Wellesley run. However, five consecutive Wellesley goals helped the Blue take a 13-4 lead when Mallett scored her sixth of the half at 3:36. Mumford set up Tomsky for Emerson at 2:24 to send the teams into the break with the Blue leading 13-5.

The Blue went on to outscore the Lions 12-0 in the second half. Persky started the run before Chalphin scored her third at 28:54. Persky added another at 26:36 and Engbretson followed to make the score 17-5 at 25:20. Senior Olivia Strobl (Stafford, Va.) netted her first on a feed from Mallett at 23:51, before setting-up Burdick's second of the afternoon at 23:14. The fourth goal from Persky and two from Dennis made it 22-5 at 14:19. First year Suze Barlow (Providence, R.I.) scored the first of her career at 11:54, before Dy and Persky closed out the scoring at 9:59 and 5:34, respectively.

Wellesley outshot Emerson by a 43-17 margin, including a 16-1 advantage after the break. Blue first year Lorna Li (Taunton, Mass.) made nine first half saves to improve to 5-7 overall. Senior Chloe Tucker (San Ramon, Calif.) turned aside the only shot she faced in relief.

Today's contest ends the 2019 season for Wellesley. Emerson will travel to Springfield to close out the NEWMAC regular season on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
