Balanced Attack Sends Blue Lacrosse Past Wentworth, 12-5

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Junior Kat Gallison (Portsmouth, R.I.) and sophomore Izzy Burdick (Scarborough, Maine) each scored hat tricks as Wellesley College lacrosse cruised to a 12-5 non-conference victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology on a windy Wednesday evening at Butler Stadium.

Senior Marika Dy (San Mateo, Calif.) was one of three players, along with junior Carson Dennis (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) and first year Liz Sugg (Palermo, Maine), to score two goals and record an assist for the Blue (1-1 overall). Gallison finished with a game-high four draw controls, while Dy and junior Ella Matticks (Minneapolis, Minn.) each tallied five of Wellesley's 33 ground balls in the contest.

First year Helen Hamblett (East Boothbay, Maine) scored two goals and had an assist to lead the Leopards (0-3). Wentworth also got goals from sophomore Jorgie Pashalian (Cranston, R.I.), first year Sherly Feliz (Salem, Mass.), and sophomore Sarah Galan (Colchester, Conn.). Junior Allie Lauersen (York, Maine) scooped up seven ground balls and four draw controls to lead the Leopards.

Wellesley never trailed in the contest, getting back-to-back goals from Dy and Sugg at 27:09 and 23:12 to start the contest. Pashalian got the visitors on the board at 20:19 but Blue goals from Dennis and Burdick at 9:07 and 6:58 stretched the lead to three, 4-1. Galan netted a free position shot for Wentworth at 3:12 but Gallison netted the final goal of the half to send the Blue into the break with a 5-2 lead. 

Wellesley scored four unanswered goals to open the second half, as Gallison completed her hat trick at 26:49 and Burdick capped the run at 22:45 to make the score 9-2. Hamblett and Feliz scored at 16:13 and 11:21 to trim the deficit to six, but the visitors would fail to rally in the final eleven minutes. The Blue got three straight goals from Sugg, Burdick and Dy to jump ahead 12-4. The last goal from Burdick came on a feed from Sugg at 6:23 to give the sophomore hat tricks in consecutive games. 

Sophomore goalkeeper Lorna Li (Taunton, Mass.) turned back nine shots to pick-up the win for the Blue. Wentworth Lily Kuhns (Gloucester, Mass.) made 15 saves in the setback. Wellesley finished the game with a 36-18 advantage in shots and a 33-19 edge in ground balls.

Wellesley will travel to Utica for a non-conference contest on Saturday, March 7, at 3:00 PM. Wentworth will take on Simmons in Haines, Fla. on Wednesday, March 11, at 10:00 AM.
