Six Players Score in 16-3 Win Over New England College

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Senior Eleanor Mallett (Berwick, Maine) scored a season-high six goals to lead the Wellesley lacrosse team (2-1) to a 16-3 win over New England College (1-2) on a rainy Saturday afternoon.

Senior Zoe Reynolds (Downers Grove, Ill.) and first year Julee Sharma (Lake Mary, Fla.) each contributed three goals for the Blue. First year Ashley You (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) added two goals and a pair of assists. Junior Liz Sugg (Palermo, Maine) and sophomore Gabrielle Shell (Upper Arlington, Ohio) rounded out the scoring for the Blue with one goal each.

Goalkeeper McKenzie Gallasso (Tolland, Conn.) made a game-high 11 saves for the Pilgrims. Senior Lauren Rich (Plaistow, N.H.) tallied two goals and classmate Haley Barnacz (Hamilton, N.J.) scored one goal in the loss.

New England was able to strike first on a goal by Barncaz after five minutes of solid defense by both teams. Just 12 seconds later, Mallett tied the game at one off an assist by You at the 9:42 mark. Sharma and Reynolds would each add a goal in the middle of the first quarter to give the Blue a 3-1 lead. Senior Izzy Burdick (Scarborough, Maine) was credited with an assist on the Reynolds goal.The Pilgrims would respond with a goal by Rich, but once again the Blue quickly answered. Mallett netted her second goal of the period and Wellesley led 4-2 after one.

Mallett began the second quarter on the right note by scoring her third goal of the game on a free position attempt. A few possessions later, Mallett found You open by the net and You scored her first goal of the contest and gave the Blue a 6-2 lead. The Pilgrims added a third goal nearly halfway through the second quarter after Rich found the back of the net. Wellesley would not be deterred as Mallett scored two more goals and the Blue took a 8-3 lead at the halfway point.

The Blue would dominate the third quarter, scoring four goals and holding New England scoreless. Shell scored her first goal of the game on a nice look from Burdick. Sharma, Reynolds, and You were the other goalscorers in the period and Wellesley had a comfortable 12-3 lead after three. Wellesley would tack on four more goals in the fourth, including the first goal of the game for Sugg. Sharma completed her hat track with 10:51 to play and Mallet and Reynolds topped off the scoring for the Blue.

Wellesley outshot the Pilgrims 38-10 as a team and forced 35 turnovers. Keeper Lorna Li (Taunton, Mass.) earned her second win and junior Hannah Pangborn (Raleigh, N.C.) made one save.

The Blue will host New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opponent Smith on Saturday, March 19 at noon. New England College will host Northern Vermont-Lyndon on Monday, March 14 at 7:00 PM.
