Blue Lacrosse Bested by Wheaton, 16-4

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley lacrosse fell to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opponent Wheaton College 16-4 on Saturday afternoon from Butler Stadium.

Wheaton improves to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference with the win and the Blue drop to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the NEWMAC.

The different players recorded a hat trick as Lara Finnie (Westfield, Mass.), Logan Truluck (Bath, Maine), and Darien Webb (Hamden, Conn.) all scored three goals for the Lyons. Wheaton outshot the Blue 43-20 as a team and forced 40 turnovers.

Blue senior sophomore Gabrielle Shell (Upper Arlington, Ohio) recorded two goals and added a ground ball. First year Anna Tutek (Trumbull, Conn.) scored the first goal of her collegiate career and senior Izzy Burdick added another.

The Lyons hit the ground running early by scoring the first two goals of the contest. Shell was able to respond at the 6:55 mark off a great find by Burdick and the Lyon lead was 2-1. Finnie found the groove and put home a pair of goals to end the first quarter and give Wheaton a 4-1 lead. The Lyons kept the offensive pressure on and scored three consecutive goals to begin the second period, including two from Webb. Tutek answered with her first career goal off an assist by senior Eleanor Mallett (Berwick, Maine) and cut the lead to 7-2 with 10:50 remaining in the half. Wheaton quickly took back control and ended the half on a 4-0 run to lead 11-2.

Out of the half, Shell sent home her second goal of the game just 17 seconds in. It marked the fifth goal of the season for Shell and the Blue trailed by eight. The Lyons picked up the defense and held Wellesley scoreless for the remainder of the third quarter while adding a pair of goals themselves. Wheaton would outscore the Blue 3-1 in the final period and hold on to a 16-4 victory.

Junior Emily Oundjian (Longmeadow, Mass.) tallied nine saves on 12 shots faced at goal for Wheaton.

Senior goalkeeper Lorna Li (Taunton, Mass.) recorded a season high 17 saves in the loss.

Wellesley will host Southern Maine for a non-conference matchup on Wednesday, March 30 at 4:00 PM. Wheaton will entertain Worcester St. on Wednesday, March 30 at 4:00 PM.
