Lacrosse Suffers Road Loss to Coast Guard, 17-5

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Blue senior Eleanor Mallett (Berwick, Maine) netted a pair of goals in a 17-5 loss at Coast Guard on Saturday afternoon.

Coast Guard jumps to 6-3 overall and remains perfect in the conference at 3-0. Wellesley falls to 2-6 overall and 0-3 in the NEWMAC.

Junior Shannon Schmidt (Jamesport, N.Y.) scored a game-high four goals on four shots for the Bears. Adding a hat trick was first year Laine Weber (Granite Bay, Calif.) and Brenda Anderson (Naperville, Ill.), Sarah Skurat (Marlboro, N.J.), and Caitlyn Coates (Hanover, Pa.) all added a pair of goals.

Mallett added five ground balls and five draw controls to go along with her two goals. Teammates Liz Sugg (Palermo, Maine) and Izzy Burdick (Scarborough, Maine) both added a goal for the Blue. First year Julee Sharma (Lake Mary, Fla.) finished with one goal and three ground balls.

The Bears got off a roaring start with Schmidt scoring her first of four goals in less than 30 seconds into the contest. The offensive pressure mounted as Coast Guard expanded its lead to 6-0 after the first quarter. Wellesley would finally end the run after Sharma found the back of the net with 11:49 remaining in the half. A second Blue goal was added just two minutes later as Burdick scored and cut the Coast Guard lead to 6-2. 

After surrendering two consecutive goals, the Bears found its offensive rhythm once again. Anderson got on the board twice in the quarter and Schmidt followed up with a goal to give Coast Guard a 10-2 lead with just 1:39 remaining in the half. The Blue wouldn't go away just yet as Mallett scored on an assist by Gabrille Shell (Upper Arlington, Ohio) as the score was 10-3 heading into the break.

Coast Guard would extend its lead to 10 out of the half with goals coming from Schmidt, Skurat, and Weber. Mallett once again responded late in the period with her second goal of the game and 20th for the season. After leading 17-4 late in the fourth quarter, Sugg tallied an unassisted goal and the final score held at 17-5. 

Wellesley goalkeeper Lorna Li (Taunton, Mass.) finished with seven saves. Sophomore Devon McCue (Annapolis , Md.) picked up the win and recorded two saves and teammate Maici Mintchwarner (Cream Ridge, N.J.) clocked 30 minutes and made three saves.

The Blue will play a rescheduled game with Worcester St. On Tuesday, April 5 at 5:00 PM at Butler Stadium. Coast Guard will remain on the road for a game with Western Conn. St. on Wednesday, April 6 at 5:00 PM.
