Wellesley Lacrosse Blanked 24-0 at Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Wellesley lacrosse team lost 24-0 on the road to Springfield College on Wednesday night.

The Blue fall to 3-10 overall and 1-6 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play. Springfield is now 10-5 as a team and 6-1 in the conference.

Senior Taylor Pichel (Hopkinton, Mass.) led the Pride with a game-high four goals and added three draw controls. Graduate student Jade O'Connor (Baltimore, Md.), junior Carlee Crispens (Wallingford, Conn.), and senior Katie Martel (Hartland, Conn.) each recorded three goals in the win. The Blue fired off five shots on goal as four were saved by Haley Moody (Wells, Maine) and one by Colleen Browne (Westford, Mass.).

Springfield raced out to an early lead at the 6:47 mark as Pichel cashed in a free position shot to put the Pride ahead 6-0. The scoring continued in the second quarter as Lily Vey (Foxboro, Mass.) put through a shot just nine seconds into the quarter to make the score 7-0 with 14:51 to play. The Pride would add seven more goals in the quarter, including three-straight from Pichel from 12:15 to 5:49 left on the clock, which made it 12-0. Arielle Johnson (Woodstock, Conn.) and O'Connor each scored before the half to make it a 14-0 lead. 

The scoring continued in the second half as Abby Taylor (Cumberland Foreside, Maine) scored a pair in the third to help Springfield own a 20-0 lead into the fourth. Emily Zambarano (South Hero, Vt.) scored the first goal of the fourth quarter, before Crispens closed out the game with three-straight goals for Springfield.

Senior Lorna Li (Taunton, Mass.) and junior Hannah Pangborn (Raleigh, N.C.) combined for 10 saves for Wellesley.

The Blue will host Mount Holyoke on Saturday, April 23 at noon for Senior Day. Springfield will play at Wheaton on Saturday with a 1:00 PM start time.
