Blue Lacrosse Falls 22-3 at MIT in Season Finale

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT junior Ellie Rabenold (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored a game-high seven goals to lead the Engineers past Wellesley 22-3 on Wednesday evening.

The Blue finish the season at 4-11 overall and 2-7 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play. MIT improves to 11-4 overall and 8-1 in the conference and move on to the NEWMAC postseason tournament.

Rabenold added four assists with her seven goals in the victory. Teammate Lindsey Gambino (Garden City, N.Y.) tallied four goals and an assist. First year Sydney Pyon (Garnet Valley, Penn.) also had four goals for the Engineers.

Blue senior Eleanor Mallett (Berwick, Maine) led the scoring for Wellesley with two goals. Fellow senior Izzy Burdick (Scarborough, Maine) scored the third goal and had three ground balls. Sophomore Gabrielle Shell (Upper Arlington, Ohio) recorded an assist for the Blue.

MIT began the game on a 6-0 run including three goals from Rabenold. Mallett was able to break the scoring drought with a free position goal at the 3:10 mark in the first. The Engineers added a trio of goals to end the period and led 9-1. The Blue got its second goal from Burdick off an assist by Shell in the middle of the second. MIT was able to add three more and led 14-2 at the break.

Rabenold was joined by Pyon and Makena Armstrong (San Diego, Calif.) with goals in the third as MIT extended its lead to 19-2. Nearly five minutes into the fourth quarter, Mallett netted her second goal of the game and 41st of the season. The Engineers tacked on three more to secure the 22-3 victory.

Blue goalkeepers Lorna Li (Taunton, Mass.) and Hannah Pangborn (Raleigh, N.C.) combined for 15 saves. MIT keeper Elena Boal (West Windsor, N.J.) made 10 saves on 13 shots faced.
