NEW LONDON, Conn. – Led by a natural hat trick from first year Carley Phillips (Waterford, Conn.), Wellesley College soccer scored a big 4-0 road victory over the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Tuesday evening.

Phillips scored three consecutive goals, and senior Maddie Carlborg (Burbank, Calif.) added a goal and an assist, to help the Blue improve to 7-8-1 overall and 4-4-1 in NEWMAC matches. The setback drops Coast Guard to 6-7-4 on the season and 2-5-2 in conference games.

Phillips got the Blue started at 13:02 in the first half, ripping a free kick from outside the penalty area over the Coast Guard wall and inside the post to make the score 1-0. Carlborg then found Phillips five minutes later to make the score 2-0, slipping the ball past the Coast Guard backline for Phillips to finish just inside the left post. Wellesley would carry the 2-0 lead into halftime

The Wellesley first year capped off her hat trick less than ten minutes into the second period of play, scoring her third goal of the game and her seventh of the season with a great individual effort. Phillips dribbled into the penalty area, faked a shot, and then buried the goal at 54:15.

The Blue added an insurance marker in the 68th minute, as Carlborg capped the scoring with her sixth of the season. Carlborg delivered a strike from the top of the box at 67:25 to make the score 4-0 Blue.

Wellesley first year Freshman Olivia Reckley (Grosse Ile, Mich) made six saves to earn her third shutout of the season and her seventh win of the year. For Coast Guard, sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Boohar (Oxford, Pa.) made five saves on nine Wellesley shots on goal.

Wellesley will close out the regular season on Saturday, October 29, at 12:00 PM when they host Springfield on Senior Day. Coast Guard will travel to MIT for a 5:00 PM contest on Saturday.
