Soccer Cruises Past Simmons 2-0 in Season Opener

BOSTON, Mass. -- Junior Eliza Roy (Camden, Maine) netted the season's first goal, leading Wellesley to a 2-0 victory over Simmons University in the 2021 season opener. First year Marleigh Ausbrooks (Washington, D.C.) scored her first career goal late in the first half.

With the match at a stalemate, Eliza Roy broke the scoreless drought at 23:40 for the first goal of the season. Roy finished the contest with four out of the team's 12 shots on goal. With the first half nearing an end, Marleigh Ausbrooks found the back of the net at the 38:11 mark. Her goal came unassisted in her first career collegiate game.

Goalkeeper Kendall Lincoln (San Diego, Calif.) posted her first career shutout. The junior faced just one shot on goal early in the first half and made the save. Wellesley was solid on both ends of the pitch, allowing just five total shots while putting up 21. Both goals scored for the Blue came unassisted.

Izabella Warren (Hillsboro, N.H.) put up two shots for the Sharks but was unable to connect. Goalkeeper Marita Nothacker (Philadelphia, Pa.) faced 11 shots, making nine saves in the match. The defense of Wellesley proved to be too much for Simmons, as the Sharks fired just one shot in the entire second half.

Wellesley will host Curry College for the team's home opener on Saturday, September 4, at 12:00 PM. The Sharks remain at home for a meeting with Lesley on Saturday, September 4 at 1:00 PM.
