NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - Sophomore Anna Gullace (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) had a multi-goal game for Smith as they defeated Wellesley College soccer 3-1 on Saturday at Smith Turf Field.
Gullace scored her first career goals and senior goalie Noemi Howland (South Pasadena, Calif.) made five saves for the Pioneers (4-3-2 Overall, 1-1-1 NEWMAC) in their win. Junior Remi Fernandez (Valencia, Spain) scored her second goal of the season for the Blue (5-4 Overall, 0-3 NEWMAC) in the setback.
Gullace broke the tied with a low center goal at the 21:03 mark to give Smith a 1-0 lead. Classmate Parker Ellis (Chicago, Ill.) assisted on the shot. Sophomore Marleigh Ausbrooks (Washington, D.C.) nearly got the Blue on the board in the 26th minute with a shot that barely rattled off the high crossbar. Gullace scored again for the Pioneers at the 29:58 mark, this time tucking a ball in the lower left corner of the goal.
Fernandez helped Wellesley cut the Pioneers' lead in half at the 33:49 mark. Fernandez capitalized on Wellesley corner, with a well placed shot finding the mark to make it 2-1 Smith.
Junior Piper Thompson (Jersey City, N.J.) ran the Smith lead to 3-1 at the 69:18 mark with a low ball from the middle of the box. Smith held the 3-1 lead through the final horn.
The Blue return home Wednesday to host Clark in a NEWMAC matchup at 4:00 PM. The Pioneers travel to Springfield Wednesday for a NEWMAC game at 7:00 PM.
