Wellesley Swim & Dive Opens Competition at MIT Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Wellesley College swimming & diving is in fourth place following the first night of competition at the MIT Winter Invitational at MIT's Zesiger Center pool. 

The three-day invitational opened on Friday evening and continues with sessions during the day and evening on both Saturday and Sunday. The Blue competed in the 800 Free Relay, 1650 Free, and 1-meter diving on Friday evening. 

Tufts currently leads the field with 310 points. Host MIT is in second with 238 points, with RPI in third (108) and the Blue in fourth (99). Wellesley has an eight point lead on fifth place Wheaton (91), while Simmons is in sixth (79) and Keene State is seventh (22).

Wellesley finished fifth and tenth in the 800 Free Relay, with the Blue 'A' relay of senior Danielle Peterson (Livingston, N.J.), first year Elizabeth Park (Dix Hills, N.Y.), senior Maggie Haley (Shady Side, Md.), and junior Hannah May (Cincinnati, Ohio) recording a time of 7:47.99. Wellesley's 'B' relay of sophomores Shelby Ripp (St. Louis, Mo.), Emery Dutton (Wayland, Mass.), Paulina Gonzalez (Caracas, Venezuela), and Marisa Papagelis (Westborough, Mass.) finished in 8:00.88. Gonzalez also earned the top Wellesley time in the 1650 Free, finishing 18th with a time of 19:17.46. 

In women's 1-meter diving, first year Lily Duff (Scituate, Mass.) took tenth with a score of 192.70. Sophomore Emma Roberts (Boxford, Mass.) and first year Claire Moreland (San Francisco, Calif.) finished in 16th (154.00) and 19th (107.25), respectively. 

Action from MIT continues Saturday, December 7, with prelims at 10:00 AM. 3-meter diving finals will follow at 12:45 PM, with Saturday's final session set to take place at 6:00 PM. In addition to 3-meter diving, Saturday's competition will include the: 200 Free Relay, 200 Fly, 200 Free, 100 Breast, 100 Back, 400 IM, 50 Free, and 400 Medley Relay (Finals Only).
