No. 17 Skidmore tops Wellesley Tennis, 6-3
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Wellesley College tennis dropped a 6-3 final to No. 17 Skidmore College on Saturday. The Blue trailed 2-1 after doubles play but dropped the first three matches in singles to fall to 0-2 overall. Skidmore is now 5-1 overall.
Skidmore opened the match with victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to jump ahead 2-0. At No. 1, Risa Fukushige (Tokyo, Japan) and Maya Lal (Belleville, Ontario) topped Selina Peng (Taichung, Taiwan) and Libby Chang (San Marino, Calif.), 8-4. At No. 2, Wellesley's Lily Chu (Princeton, N.J.) and Cinji Lee (Seoul, South Korea) dropped an 8-3 decision to Lily Feldman (Bettendorf, Iowa) and Sofia Carlsson (Alingsas, Sweden).
Wellesley sophomore Michaela Markwart (Hanover, Mass.) and partner Michelle Shen (Dallas, Texas) earned an 8-2 victory at No. 2 doubles over Renee Karchere-Sun (South Brunswick, N.J.) and Jessica Ampel (Evanston, Ill.) to send the Blue into singles trailing by just one point, 2-1.
Skidmore clinched the match with three straight victories to open singles play. At No. 3 singles, Feldman earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Shen to put the hosts ahead 3-1. Wins of 7-5, 6-2 by Lal over Chang at No. 2 and 6-4, 6-1 by Fukushige over Markwart at No. 1 gave the Thoroughbreds the team victory.
For the second consecutive match, Peng picked up a Blue victory in singles play, defeating Karchchere-Sun, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 at No. 4 to make the score 5-2. Wellesley split the final two matches to close out the 6-3 final. Lee earned a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Audrey Soohoo (Alameda, Calif.) at No. 6 but first year Dana Feng (Irvine, Calif.) fell in a tiebreaker at No. 5, dropping an 0-6, 6-4, 11-9 final to Chanhtel Thongphok (Gaithersburg, Md.).
Wellesley will take on Rensselaer in its next match tomorrow morning, March 1, at 10:00 AM at Tri-City Fitness in Latham, N.Y.
