Tennis Cruises to 9-0 Win over Wheaton

WELLESLEY, Mass. – No. 34 Wellesley College tennis cruised to a 9-0 victory over New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival Wheaton College on Saturday morning at Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse.

The Blue, winners in six of their last seven matches, improved to 8-4 overall and 5-0 in conference play. Wheaton is now 5-10 (2-3 NEWMAC) on the season.

The Blue swept the top two doubles matches to open the day. Sophomores Annissa Mu (Saratoga, Calif.) and Melinda Alviar (Indianapolis, Ind.) defeated senior Miriam Galindo Cerrada (Madrid, Spain) and sophomore ​​Mareike Mueller (Amesbury, Mass.), 8-1, in the top pairing. Wellesley senior Michelle Shen (Dallas, Texas) and sophomore Cristiana DeAgazio (Winchester, Mass.) earned the win at No. 2 doubles with an 8-3 victory over Wheaton seniors Alexis Acosta (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Katie Steinberg (Cumberland, Maine).

In singles play, junior Celeste Tran (Los Altos, Calif.) extended the Wellesley advantage with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Izzy Kruse (Woodstock, Ga.) at No. 5. Mu then followed up her doubles performance with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Acosta at No. 2 before the Blue earned 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles. Wellesley senior Michelle Shen (Dallas, Texas) defeated Katie Steinberg at No. 2 and Alviar topped Mueller at No. 3. Blue senior Michaela Markwart (Hanover, Mass.) closed out the victory with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Galindo Cerrada in the top singles match. 

Wellesley won the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles matches by default.

Next up, Wellesley will head to Cambridge, Mass. on Tuesday afternoon for a NEWMAC showdown with No. 6 MIT at 3:30 PM. Wheaton will host Springfield next Saturday, April 23, at 1:30 PM.
