No. 3 Blue Tennis Defeats No. 6 Springfield 5-0 to Advance to NEWMAC Semifinals

WELLESLEY, Mass. – No. 3 seed Wellesley College tennis defeated No. 6 seed Springfield College 5-0 in the 2024 NEWMAC Women's Tennis Championships First Round on Tuesday at The Amy Batchelor '88, Trustee, Tennis Courts.

With the win, the Blue (13-5 Overall, 7-2 NEWMAC) advance to the NEWMAC Semifinals. The team will head across town to face No. 2 seed Babson on Saturday, May 4 at 12:00 PM.

First years Lily Cade (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Kriti Sarav (Chicago, Ill.) gave the Blue its first point with an 8-1 decision over Springfield sophomores Alyssa Elliot (Gros-Islet, Saint Lucia) and Kelly McGoldrick (Monroe, N.Y.). Wellesley sophomore Emilee Pak (Chicago, Ill.) and first year Suzanne Xu (Boyds, Md.) continued the scoring for Wellesley with an unblemished 8-0 win against grad student Veronica Fulgieri (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) and senior Kate Rosselli (Trumbull, Conn.).

Seniors Annissa Mu (Saratoga, Calif.) and Melinda Alviar (Indianapolis, Ind.) completed the sweep in doubles for the Blue with an 8-4 win against junior Ramida Manataweewat (Thailand, Bangkok) and first year Kapom Vettayawaikoon (Phuket, Thailand).

Wellesley was awarded a fourth point when Rosselli had to retire against Sarav at No. 6 singles before the match started.

First year Veda Madhusudan (Short Hills, N.J.) took the deciding point for the Blue at No. 5 singles. Madhusudan put together a consistent 6-0, 6-1 performance to top McGoldrick.

Mu, Xu, Alviar and Pak were all in the middle of matches at No. 1-4 singles when the match was decided.

Mu trailed Vettayawaikoon 4-6 at No. 1 singles. At No. 2 singles, Xu's score was 5-5 with Manataweewat. Alviar took a 6-1 first at No. 3 singles and led 3-0 in the second set over Fulgieri. Pak held a 6-0, 2-1 advantage over Elliot at No. 4 singles.
