Wellesley Volleyball Powers Past Eastern Nazarene in Season Opener

WELLESLEY, Ma. -- Wellesley College volleyball blanked Eastern Nazarene College on Saturday afternoon, earning a 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-15) sweep in the team's non-conference home opener at Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse. The Blue open the season with a win (1-0) while the Lions are now 0-1.

Junior Lauren Gedney (Huntersville, N.C.) led the Blue with 13 kills, one block and four digs. Junior Nikki Jensen (Castro Valley, Calif.) and sophomore Nicole Doerges (San Marino, Calif.) chipped in nine kills each. Sophomore setter Izzy Seebold (Concord, N.H.) tossed up 37 assists and four service aces for the Blue. Jensen also finished the match with 20 total digs, while senior Meghan Shoop (Cypress, Calif.) racked up 15 digs in three sets.

Sophomore Amya Altman (Butler, Pa.) collected 12 digs and five service aces for the Lions, leading the team with five total points. Junior Rebecca Thorne (Quincy, Ma.) followed close behind with four and a half total points, putting down four kills along with one dig and one block assist for ENC.

The Blue jumped to a 10-3 lead to open the match before earning a 25-15 first set victory. ENC countered to open the second set, taking a 10-5 lead when senior Courtney McCarthy (Merrimack, N.H.) powered down a kill off an assist from sophomore Ruth Aguilar (Tegucigalpa, Honduras). However, The Blue rallied back, taking an 18-17 lead following an ENC error late in the second. McCarthy finished the match with a pair of kills for the Lions.

The Blue would go on to close out the second set with a 25-19 victory. Doerges capped the second set comeback with a kill on an assist from Seebold. Early in the third set, Doerges tied up the match at 7-7 before the Blue went on to outscore the Lions 15-3 over the next 18 points. Leading 22-10, Wellesley closed out the set 25-15 and the match 3-0.

The Blue return to the court on Friday, September 6 at 8pm to face Bowdoin College at the Wesleyan Tournament in Connecticut. Eastern Nazarene hosts the University of Southern Maine on Wednesday, September 4 at 7pm.
