NCAA Volleyball Game Notes: Wellesley vs. Clarkson (Second Round)

POTSDAM, N.Y. -- Wellesley College volleyball (23-5 overall) will play Clarkson (26-5 overall) on Saturday, November 16, at 5:00 PM in the 2019 NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Championship Second Round at the Potsdam, N.Y. Regional, hosted by Clarkson University.

TICKETS - Available at the site of competition:

  • Single-session tickets: $6 for adults, $4 for students, $3 for children
  • All-session passes: $12 for adults, $10 for students, $7 for children

Clarkson Golden Knights:

The top-seeded Golden Knights (26-5 overall) are making the program's 10th NCAA trip and first since 2017... Clarkson earned an automatic bid after winning the Liberty League Championship with a 3-2 win over Ithaca College on Nov. 9... the Golden Knights defeated #8 Westfield State, 3-0, in the NCAA First Round on Friday... Clarkson jumped out of the gates with 18 kills and a .630 hitting percentage in the first set... ended the first set with a 16-8 run... allowed just six points in the second set... raced out to a 15-4 lead in the third set to take three double-digit wins (25-14, 25-6, 25-13).

Good Knights:

Senior Rachel Reusch leads Clarkson in kills (368) and total blocks (66.0)... including Reusch, the Golden Knight attack features four players with over 200 kills this season in Kristin Werdine (252), Gillian Kurtic (213), and Maddie Bredehoeft (203)... setter Isabelle Crow leads the squad 873 assists in her rookie season...libero Kate Isaksen is the team leader in digs (641)... her 6.05 digs/set average is good for 14th in NCAA Division III. 

Wellesley College Blue:

Wellesley improved to 23-5 overall with an NCAA First Round Victory over Brockport on Nov. 15... junior Nikki Jensen and sophomore Nicole Doerges (San Marino, Calif.) each tallied nine kills and ten digs in the win...the Blue earned an at-large bid out of the the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC)... Wellesley lost to Emerson, 3-2, in the the NEWMAC semifinals... the setback snapped a 25-match home court winning streak, at the time the fourth longest in the nation.

Lead Blue:

Junior Lauren Gedney leads the Blue in kills (427)... Gedney surpassed 1,000 career kills on Oct. 18 in a 3-2 win over Amherst... Wellesley's balanced attack features four players with 100+ kills... sophomore Nicole Doerges (310) and junior Nikki Jensen (229) lead the attack from the outside... junior Molly Weik has 113 kills in the middle... sophomore setter Izzy Seebold leads the team in assists (1,062)... Seebold is the first Wellesley setter with 1,000+ assists in a season since Victoria Peng '11 in 2008 (1,445)... senior Meghan Shoop leads the Blue in digs (372)... Shoop is 49 digs shy of 1,000 in her Wellesley career.

All-Everything:

Lauren GedneyNicole Doerges, and Izzy Seebold were each named to the NEWMAC All-Conference team... the trio also earned AVCA New England All-Region honors... Gedney, an honorable mention All-American in 2018, is a three-time All-Conference and All-Region honoree... the All-Conference and All-Region honors are the first for both Doerges and Seebold. 

Wellesley in the NCAA Tournament:

The Blue are 19-14 all-time in NCAA Championship play... Wellesley is making the program's third consecutive and 14th overall trip to the NCAA Women's Volleyball Championship... the last time the Blue made three consecutive trips to the NCAA Championship was 2007, 2008, and 2009.

Head Coach Dorothy Webb:

The Blue have been to the NCAA Tournament 13 times under the direction of Head Coach Dorothy Webb, advancing to five NCAA National Quarterfinals and two Final Fours (1998, 2001)... now in her 27th season on the Blue bench... Wellesley's all-time leader in victories (633) ...earned NEWMAC Coach of the Year honors in 2019 for the first time since 2009... a conference record 10th time overall.

Bracket Breakdown:

The winner of Saturday's match will play #2 Ithaca College or #3 Wesleyan (Conn.) in the Regional Final on Sunday, November 17, at 1:00 PM...  the Regional Champion will advance to the NCAA Division III Quarterfinals, November 21-23, 2019, at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
