Coast Guard Overpowers Wellesley Volleyball, 3-1

WELLESLEY, Mass. - Coast Guard utilized their offense and consistency in a 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 25-15, 25-19) New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) win against Wellesley College volleyball on Tuesday at Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse.

Sophomore Kaela France (Calhan, Colo.) had 30 digs for the Bears (15-5 Overall, 4-3 NEWMAC) while senior Noelle Tursky (Fort Myers, Fla.), sophomore Shannon Shaw (Torrence, Calif.), and first year Allie Wildsmith (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) each had double-digit kills for Coast Guard. Sophomore Mikayla Tansil (Warren, Mich.) had 15 digs and 33 assists for the Blue (6-11 Overall, 0-7 NEWMAC) and first year Kaija Kunze-Hoeg (Eagan, Minn.) paced Wellesley's offense with 20 kills.

Wellesley led early in the first, with a kill from sophomore Jennifer Yu (Shanghai, China) giving the Blue a 9-4 lead. The Bears rallied and took the lead at 11-10. After Wellesley made it 13-11 the Bears won nine of the next 12 points, and finished a 25-20 set with two kills from sophomore Carlee Lingle (Schertz, Texas).

The Blue came out swinging in the second, with a kill by sophomore Mia Maxwell (Arlington, Mass.) giving the Blue a 14-7 lead. While the Bears got within one at 16-15, the Blue capitalized on a few untimely errors from Coast Guard, before finishing a 25-21 set with two straight kills from Maxwell.

The Bears quickly regrouped, winning the first five points in the third. The Bears never trailed in the 25-15 set, with Tursky, Wildsmith, and first year Sarah Somer (Cary, N.C.) helping Coast Guard take a 2-1 lead.

The fourth set was even until 10-10 when the Bears used a seven point run, including three kills from Tursky, to create space. The Blue got the lead back down to four at 21-17, but ultimately a kill from junior Elizabeth Atkinson (Brookeline, N.H.) gave the Bears a 25-19 set, and the match.

The Blue look to rebound with a tri-match against Roger Williams and Johnson and Wales on Saturday at Roger Williams. Those matches take place at 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM. The Bears next play Saturday when they host Endicott at 4:00 PM.
