Wellesley Volleyball Falls to Smith, 3-0

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - Smith defeated Wellesley College volleyball 3-0, (25-19, 25-15, 25-22) in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Tuesday at Ainsworth Gym.

First year Mia Moscicki (Medford Lakes, N.J.) led the Pioneers (18-7 Overall, 4-4 NEWMAC) with 11 kills, while classmate Sophia Padilla (Fontana, Calif.) had 33 assists. Sophomore Jennifer Yu (Shanghai, China) had nine kills for the Blue (7-13 Overall, 0-8 NEWMAC) and junior Kate Salembier (Sierra Madre, Calif.) added seven of her own.

The first set began close, with Smith leading 13-11 before going on a 4-1 run. While the Blue got the lead back to three at 21-18, a kill from Smith sophomore Sarah Dankovich (El Paso, Texas) finished a 25-19 set.

Smith got out to a 7-3 lead early in the second set. The Pioneers never let their lead drop below four after that in a strong second set that included 10 kills on a .304 hitting percentage.

The Pioneers took another commanding 13-5 lead in the third. This time Wellesley brought the game back, with a service ace from first year Kennedy Mayo (Long Branch, N.J.) bringing Smith's lead down to one at 20-19. The Pioneers regrouped, and a kill from first year Olivia Teske (Minneapolis, Minn.) closed a 25-22 set.

Wellesley returns home tomorrow to face Regis at 7:00 PM. Smith will travel to Huntingdon, Pa. to take part in the Wid Guisler Invitational. Smith's first contest is against York (Pa.) at 4:30 PM on Friday.
