Blue Cross Country Takes Eighth at UMass Dartmouth Invitational

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Wellesley College cross country raced to an eighth place finish on Saturday at the 5K UMass Dartmouth Invitational held at the Robert Dowd Cross Country Course. Senior Claire Anderson (Denver, Colo.) was the top overall finisher for the Blue, taking fourth with a personal record time of 18:08.32. 

Mount Holyoke College senior Lauren Selkin (Greenwich, Conn.) was the individual winner in 17:49.26. Division I UMass Lowell (54 points) won the meet, followed by Division I Stonehill (120) in second place and Division II Southern New Hampshire (121) in third. The top Division III team in the field was WPI (139) in fourth place.

Wellesley senior Ellie Murphy-Weise (San Francisco, Calif.) took 13th place with a PR of 18:28.02. Anderson and Murphy-Weise combined to help the Blue finish as one of only three teams in the field with two runners in the top 13. 

First years Ella Whinney (Madison, Wis.), Claire Peng (Chapel Hill, N.C.) and Megan Cunningham (Portland, Maine) were the final scoring runners for the Blue. Whinney was 42nd overall (19:05.37), followed by Peng in 57th (19:19.20) and Cunningham in 105th (20:03.40). All three times were personal records.

Also running for the Blue in the varsity race, first year Olivia Torres (Coral Gables, Fla.) was 139th overall (20:32.03). Sophomore Alicia Naranjo-Champion (El Monte, Calif.) was the top Wellesley finisher in the sub-varsity race with a time of 21:07.21.

Wellesley is scheduled to compete next at the Connecticut College Invitational on October 15 at Harkness Memorial State Park in Waterford, Conn.
