Negron, Sharkin Each Score Twice As Field Hockey Rolls To 5-0 Win at Wheaton

NORTON, Mass. -- Senior Nikki Sharkin (Summit, N.J.) and sophomore Cecie Negron (Midlothian , Va.) each scored a pair of goals and first year Mitzi Wiggin (North Hampton, N.H.) added a pair of assists as No. 11 Wellesley College field hockey rolled to a 5-0 New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory over Wheaton College on Saturday at Nordin Field.

Sharkin scored the game-winner just 5:59 into the contest to help the Blue improve to 4-1 overall (1-0 NEWMAC). The host Lyons are now 2-4 (0-1 NEWMAC) following their third consecutive defeat.

Sharkin would add her second goal of the game eight minutes later when Wiggin found her open on Wellesley's eighth penalty corner opportunity of the day to make the score 2-0. The Blue finished with a 16-4 edge in penalty corner chances, outshooting Wheaton 32-6 in the contest.

The Blue made it 3-0 before the half, cashing in on another penalty corner when Negron ripped a shot into the cage at 27:43. Following the break, Wiggin set up Negron for her second of the game, as Negron unleashed a shot directly off the corner insert and in at 51:57.

Wellesley added one more goal before the end of the contest, as sophomore Haley Chrobock (Branchville, N.J.) extended her goal-scoring streak to three games when classmate Rachel Hwang (Campbell, Calif.) found her on the right post to make the score 5-0 at 61:27.

In goal, Wellesley sophomore Maggie Connelly (Duxbury, Mass.) made two saves to earn her first career win and first career shutout in her first career start. Wheaton junior goalkeeper Riley Thompson (Fairfield, Conn.) made 13 saves, including one on a penalty stroke in the 34th minute.

Wellesley will travel to take on No. 12 Tufts in their next game on Tuesday, September 20, at 5:00 PM. Wheaton will also play Tuesday, when they host Simmons for a 7:00 PM contest.
