Wellesley Softball Wins Against Clarkson, Millikin in Clermont

CLERMONT, Fla. – Wellesley College softball went 2-0 against Clarkson University and Millikin University at Legends Way Ballfields on Wednesday.

Junior Lauren Young (Fresno, Calif.) pitched a complete game against Clarkson for the Blue (5-3 Overall). Young only allowed a single run and produced four strikeouts. First year Sarah Wicker (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) improved to 2-1 in the circle for the Blue with five innings of one-run ball against Millikin.

Wellesley utilized strong defense behind Young's pitching to take a 4-1 win over Clarkson. Both teams' offenses were held at bay, with four hits per side.

The Golden Knights (4-7) hopped on the board in the top of the second. Junior Emma Sabourin (Grand Isle, Vt.) drove in classmate Bridget Kerwin (Rochester, N.Y.) on a single through the left side.

Wellesley responded in the bottom half of the second with a trio of runs. Senior Parker Phillips (River Forest, Ill.) doubled and later came across the plate on a wild pitch. Young and sophomore Andrea Delgado (Miami, Fla.) both drove in runs on ground balls.

The Blue brought its lead to 4-1 in the third with a single up the middle from first year Anisa Rodriguez (La Quinta, Calif.) scoring Phillips.

Neither team scored in the final four innings, with both defenses backing their respective pitchers. 

Young improved to 2-1 on the season with the win. Sophomore Lily Corrice (Oakdale, Conn.) threw the first four innings for Clarkson. Junior Devin Fitzpatrick (Saugerties, N.Y.) struck out three in relief.

Wellesley took an early lead in the first when Phillips walked home Wicker. The Blue doubled the lead in the second when Wicker drove in Delgado on a single through the left side.

Millikin (9-7 Overall) made it a 2-1 game in the bottom of the third. After a runner reached on an error, senior Leah Foreman (Riverton, Ill.) picked up an RBI with a double to left center. The Blue recovered and got out of the inning with its lead intact.

Rodriquez gave the Blue its third run in the top of the sixth. The first year drove in Phillips with a single to center.

In the bottom of the fifth, Millikin shrunk Wellesley's to one when first year Charley Condill (Arthur, Ill.) scored on a ground ball to second.

Wellesley answered back with a one-run double from first year Emily Kulhanek (Newbury Park, Calif.) in the top of the seventh. The Blue capitalized on a throw later in the inning, scoring Kulhanek and junior Peytin Penny (Louisville, Ky.) to expand its lead to 6-2.

First year Jillian Colgan (Las Vegas, Nev.) retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh for Wellesley to earn the save.

Wellesley earned eight hits while limiting Millikin to two. First year Megan Walker (Coatesville,  Ind.) struck out a pair over 6.1 innings for Millikin.

The Blue finish spring break tomorrow back at Legends Way Ballfields. The team faces Elmhurst at 9:15 AM and St. Lawrence at 11:15 AM.
