Wellesley Tennis Competes at Middlebury Invitational
Against Middlebury, the Panthers took a 3-0 lead after the
doubles competition. Wellesley edged back in singles, as the
Blue picked up big wins from sophomore Marie
Watanabe (Houston, TX) and junior Jacqueline
Shen (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) in the top two
flights. Watanabe was a 7-5, 1-6, 10-8 winner over #21
Victoria Aiello, while Shen was a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Alexandra
McAtee.
Wellesley also got a win at number five where senior Meghan
Stubblebine (Cumming, GA) was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over
Middlebury's Alyssa Puccinelli. However, Middlebury sealed
the team victory as the Panthers took the third, fourth and sixth
flights for the 6-3 victory.
In a late match against NYU, Wellesley held a 2-1 advantage after doubles. Watanabe and Stubblebine combined for an 8-5 win over Elizabeth Stachtiaris and Ariel Sultan at two, and Herman and Stephanie Chu (Hilo, HI) posted an 8-4 victory over Sara Joo and Tiffany Thong at three.
Mariya Chokova (Kazanlak, Bulgaria) got the only win for the Blue in five singles, defeating Joo 3-6, 6-1, 10-5. NYU took the match 5-3 with wins at two, three, four and six.
Wellesley tennis is back in action at their spring training trip to California next week. The Blue will travel across the country to take on Redlands on Tuesday, March 23 at 3:00pm and then will play Pomona Pitzer on Thursday the 25th at 3:00pm.
