Blue Tennis Rolls to 8-1 Win over Springfield

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Wellesley College tennis team locked up the number two seed in the upcoming NEWMAC tournament with an 8-1 win over Springfield College at home on Saturday afternoon.

Today's match ended the NEWMAC regular season for both teams. The Blue now stand at 6-1 in NEWMAC play, finishing second behind MIT. Springfield, meanwhile, is 2-5 in the NEWMAC and will not advance to the postseason.

Wellesley used a dominating performance in doubles to set the tone for the match. The Blue allowed just two total games against them, including winning the second and third flights by 8-0 scores.

At first doubles, Diana Granger and Sojung Lee picked up an 8-2 win over Springfield's Sam Carney and Siena Green. At two, Erica Choo and Joyce Chen topped Vanessa Senecal and Sydney Streimer, while at three, Suzanne Barth and Veronica Lin defeated Erin Woodbury and Amy Buttarazzi.

In singles play, Wellesley won the first five flights in straight sets, while Springfield picked up their point in the sixth spot. At one, Granger topped Carney, 6-3, 6-3, while at two, Lee defeated Green, 6-0, 6-0. At three Barth was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Woodbury and at four, Abby Esrock defeated Streimer, 6-0, 6-0. At five, Chen defeated Melanie Thulin, 6-1, 6-2, while at six, Springfield's Senecal defeated Elena Bowen, 7-5, 6-2.

Wellesley receives a bye in the quarterfinal round of the NEWMAC tournament, slated to begin on Wednesday. The Blue will next square off against the tournament's #3 seed on Saturday at 3:00pm in the semifinals. Complete NEWMAC tournament seeding will be announced tomorrow.
