Wellesley Tennis Wins C, D Draws on Day Two of NEWITT

NORTHAMPTON & HOLYOKE, Mass. - Sophomore Emilee Pak (Chicago, Ill.) and first year Veda Madhusudan (Short Hills, N.J.) won the "C" draw while senior Jennifer Fan (Vancouver, British Columbia) and first year Dalia Khera (Houston, Texas) won the "D" draw for Wellesley College tennis on Saturday at the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) hosted by Smith and Mount Holyoke.

Fan and Khera capped off a perfect weekend with a 3-0 performance against Smith's Miranda Gibson (Bethlehem, Pa.) and Sabrina Wang (Beijing, China) that included a gutsy 8-7(2) win in doubles.

Pak and Madhusudan Wellesley won a 3-0 quarterfinal against a Wheaton team of Izzy Kruse (Woodstock, Ga.) and Asia Hollis (Hamilton, Bermuda). The win featured an 8-0 shutout for Pak over Hollis. 

The Wellesley duo then followed the performance up with a 3-0 shutout of Trinity's Elise Brennan (Valatie, N.Y.) and Naisha Rathi (Westbury, N.Y.). In the finals, Pak secured another 8-0 win during the Blue's 3-0 championship victory against Wheaton's Laila Haraj-Sai (Madison, Conn.) and Taylor Wilson (Dover, N.H.).

Blue first years Suzanne Xu (Boyds, Md.) and Michelle Yeo (Singapore) advanced to the semifinals of the "B" draw with a 3-0 victory over Mount Holyoke's Annika Chai (London, England) and Jaskirat Kaur (Mohali, India). Both Xu and Yeo won  8-2 in singles and the duo earned an 8-4 doubles win to complete the sweep.

Xu and Yeo defeated Smith's Ayla Hauser (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Aranne Jung (Los Angeles, Calif.) 3-0 in the semifinals including 8-2 wins from Xu and the doubles match.

Also in the "C" draw, first years Lily Cade (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Kriti Sarav (Chicago, Ill.) moved on with a 3-0 quarterfinal win over Smith's Dayana Caluna (Plainfield, N.J.) and Sophia Dube (Portland, Ore.). After convincing wins in singles, the Blue won a competitive 8-7(3) doubles match.

Cade and Sarav fell 2-1 to Haraj-Sai and Wilson in the "C" draw semifinals, despite winning 8-1 in doubles.

Seniors Annissa Mu (Saratoga, Calif.) and Melinda Alviar (Indianapolis, Ind.) fell 2-1 in the "A" draw consolation bracket to Trinity's Josephine Kimball (New York, N.Y.) and Angelina Shyltsyna (Odessa, Ukraine). Though the Blue won doubles 8-3, Kimball and Shyltsyna had matching 8-2 scores over Mu and Alviar in singles.

Xu and Yeo will compete in the "B" draw finals tomorrow, with play beginning at 9:00 AM.
