Blue Tennis Tops Bates, 6-3

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College tennis earned a 6-3 non-conference victory over Bates College on Saturday at The Amy Batchelor '88, Trustee, Tennis Courts.

The Blue improve to 2-1 overall early in the spring season while Bates drops to 2-5 overall on the year.

Wellesley took two of the three doubles matches to open the match, earning victories at No. 1 and No. 3. At No. 1 doubles, seniors Annissa Mu (Saratoga, Calif.) and Melinda Alviar (Indianapolis, Ind.) earned an 8-6 win over senior Ally Friedman (East Hampton, N.Y. ) and first year Iris Westmoreland (New Orleans, La. ). At No. 3 doubles, First years Kriti Sarav (Chicago, Ill.) and Lily Cade (Minneapolis, Minn.) defeated juniors Lizzie Frekko (Lake Forest, Ill.) and Ava Lyon (Naples, Fla.), 8-4.

Bates sophomore Isabella Saul (Brooklyn, N.Y. ) and first year Julia Anderson (Chevy Chase, Md.) earned an 8-6 victory over Wellesley sophomore Emilee Pak (Chicago, Ill.) and first year Suzanne Xu (Boyds, Md.) at No. 2 doubles.

The Blue clinched the match with victories in four of the six singles match-ups. Pak earned the victory at No. 4 singles, defeating Saul 6-1, 7-5. Sarav also added a two-set win at No. 6 singles, topping Lyon, 6-3, 6-4. The remaining four singles matches each went to three sets. Bates earned wins at No. 1, where Friedman defeated Mu, 6-2, 6-7, 6-1, and at No. 5, a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory for Frekko over Blue first year Veda Madhusudan (Short Hills, N.J.).

Wellesley clinched the match with victories at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. First year Suzanne Xu (Boyds, Md.) defeated Anderson, 6-2, 6-7, 6-1 at No. 2. At No. 3, Alviar topped Westmoreland, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.

Next up, the Blue will travel to Oregon over spring break. The team will play at George Fox on Monday, February 18 at 7:00 PM EST in the first of three matches in the Pacific Northwest. Bates travels to Vassar for a 3:00 match on Thursday, March 21.
