Blue Tennis Squeaks Past Smith, 5-4

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Wellesley College tennis narrowly won its NEWMAC match at Smith College on Saturday. The Blue (9-4 Overall, 4-1 NEWMAC) won No. 2 and 3 doubles over the Lyons (9-5 Overall, 4-3 NEWMAC). The two teams split singles 3-3, with Wellesley winning matches at No. 2, 5 and 6.

Juniors Lili Goshgarian (Lake Forest, Ill.) and Clara Goshgarian (Lake Forest, Ill.) put Smith on the board with an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles against seniors Annissa Mu (Saratoga, Calif.) and Melinda Alviar (Indianapolis, Ind.).

Wellesley sophomore Emilee Pak (Chicago, Ill.) and first year Suzanne Xu (Boyds, Md.) went to a tiebreak with Smith sophomore Marielle Sauber (The Woodlands, Texas) and first year Ayla Hauser (Knoxville, Tenn.) at No. 2 doubles. The Blue came away with an 8-7(6) win.

No. 3 doubles also featured a tiebreaker. Wellesley first years Lily Cade (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Kriti Sarav (Chicago, Ill.) beat first years Aranne Jung (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Sabrina Wang (Beijing, China) 8-7(3).

Sarav extended Wellesley's lead with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over sophomore Dayana Caluna (Plainfield, N.J.) at No. 6 singles.

Smith evened up the match at 3-3 with points at No. 1 and 4 singles. Hauser won 6-1, 6-2 against Mu at No. 1 singles. Jung earned a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Pak at No. 4 singles.

First year Veda Madhusudan (Short Hills, N.J.) pushed Wellesley's lead to 4-3 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Wang at No. 5 singles. Xu proved to be the clinching point at No. 5 singles. The first year pulled off a 7-5, 6-2 win over C. Goshgarian at No. 2 singles.

The Pioneers won the final match of the day at No. 3 singles. L. Goshgarian won a three-set 7-6(3), 3-6, 1-0(5) match against Alviar.

Next up, the Blue head to Wheaton tomorrow for a 12:00 contest. The Pioneers welcome Springfield at 4:00 PM on Tuesday, April 23.
