Scudder, Mohtes-Chan Lead Field Hockey to 2-1 Opening Day Win

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Senior Sally Scudder tallied a goal and an assist to lead the Wellesley College field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Gordon College in the season-opening contest for both schools.

Gordon took an early lead when Heidi Lavigne tipped Melinda Fowler's attempt into the top left corner of the goal for a 1-0 advantage. The goal came at 2:45 after a penalty corner started by Clara Baker.

Ten minutes later, Wellesley knotted the game at 1-1 after converting a penalty corner of its own. An initial shot from Katie Frett was saved by Gordon keeper Anna Bury, however, Scudder was there to intercept the rebounded ball and put it into the back of the net for the equalizer.

The game remained 1-1 through the half and until the 53rd minute of play. A Wellesley penalty corner put Scudder at the top of the circle for the stroke and her attempt was tipped in by junior Sarah Mohtes-Chan. The score gave the Blue a 2-1 lead with 17 minutes to play.

Gordon notched five shot attempts and two penalty corners over the final 15 minutes of play, but the Blue's defense held. Senior keeper Sarina Sawyer saved three over the stretch, while classmate Alison Mehan recorded a defensive save off of Samantha Neverett's 56th-minute shot to preserve the Wellesley win.

Sawyer finished with seven saves, while her Gordon counterpart, Bury, also tallied seven stops.

Wellesley is back in action on Wednesday for their second-straight home contest, taking on New England College at 4:30pm. Gordon opens their home slate on Thursday, playing Southern Maine at 6:00pm.
