Lockwood Sends Babson Field Hockey Past Wellesley

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Babson College's Morgan Lockwood racked up four goals as the Beavers field hockey team rallied from a three-goal deficit to defeat Wellesley, 6-3, in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

The result improves Babson to 4-2 overall, while the Blue's season mark also stands at 4-2.

Babson rallied from a three goal deficit, by shifting the momentum late in the first half. Wellesley seemingly had the game in check, opening up a three-goal lead with 10 minutes to play. Babson however, got two quick goals to close out the half and then dominated much of the second period to seal the come-from-behind victory.

Wellesley's Emily Lewis scored her teams first two goals, the initial was assisted by Whitney Reid, while the second came off of a feed from Allison Robbins. Nathalie Gruet then pushed the Blue advantage to 3-0 with an unassisted score in the 25th minute.

Babson needed just 40 seconds to cut the lead to 3-1, as Lockwood stole the ball from a Blue defender in front of the cage and snuck it in for the score. Six minutes later off of a broken corner, a nice pass from Courtney Weaving found Lockwood and the sophomore again found the back of the cage.

The Beavers nearly tied it in the final three minutes of the first half, as Hannah Feneberg created a one-on-one situation with Blue keeper Brit Mscisz, but her shot was saved and the game was sent into the half with Wellesley up, 3-2.

The second half was all Babson, as the Beavers out-scored the Blue, 4-0. Lockwood picked up two more goals, while Kristen Steigerwalg scored off of a penalty corner (inserted by Weaving, stick-stopped by Anneliese Brosch.) Brosch would add a score of her own with no time on the clock, scoring on a penalty corner after a pass from Lockwood.

The game ended with Babson holding a17-16 advantage in shots, but 11 of Wellesley's attempts game in the first half. The Beavers also held an 11-10 edge in penalty corners, with seven of them coming in the second half.

Wellesley's Mscisz picked up three first-half saves, while Becky Hamilton stopping three in the second half. For Babson, Jess Pashos needed four saves to earn the win.

Both schools head to non-conference opponents on Tuesday. Wellesley travels to Wesleyan for a 6:30pm match-up, while Babson goes to Bridgewater Stats for a 7:00pm game.
