Blue Field Hockey Falls 5-2 at MIT

WELLESLEY, Mass. – MIT scored five unanswered goals in the second half, including a natural hat-trick from sophomore Bailey Tregoning (Frederick, Md), to down Wellesley College field hockey, 5-2, in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Tuesday evening.

MIT improves to 10-3 on the season and 5-1 in conference, dealing the Blue a setback that drops Wellesley to 7-7 on the season and 4-3 in NEWMAC action.

Wellesley senior Courtney Peterson (Glastonbury, Conn.) factored into both Wellesley goals on the evening, scoring in the first half on an assist from sophomore Cecie Negron (Midlothian, Va.) and setting up sophomore Arielle Mitropoulos (Cambridge, Mass.) for her second of the season in the second half. Mitropoulous' goal made the score 2-0 Blue 6:31 after the half, but the Engineers came storming back.

Junior Emily Penn (Columbia, Md.) made the score 2-1 with an unassisted marker at 48:45, before the Engineers tied the contest when first year Devon Goetz (Rockville, Md.) slammed home a loose ball at 54:29. Tregoning then registered a natural hat-trick over the next eight minutes of play to turn a 2-2 tie into a 5-2 MIT advantage. 

Tregoning scored her first goal off a rebound at 57:55, before tallying her second just over a minute and a half later on another put-back. The MIT sophomore closed out the run with the final goal of the game at 62:04 and now has nine goals on the season. 

MIT goalkeeper first year Kate Brewer (Louisville, Ky.) made two saves on four Wellesley shots on goal. In the Wellesley cage, sophomore Maggie Connelly (Duxbury, Mass.) turned back 11 chances. MIT finished the game with a 19-6 lead in shots, outshooting the Blue by a 13-4 margin in the second half.

Wellesley will host non-conference Bridgewater St. on Thursday, October 20, at 4:00 PM in the team's next contest. MIT will play at Mount Holyoke in NEWMAC action on Saturday, October 22.
