NORTON, Mass. -- Sophomore Caitlin Campbell (San Diego, Calif.) scored the game-winning goal with 2:29 remaining in regulation to lift Wellesley College field hockey to a 3-2 New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory over Wheaton College on Saturday afternoon at Nordin Field.

Campbell's sixth goal of the season helped the Blue improve to 10-8 overall and end the regular season with a 4-4 mark in the NEWMAC. Wheaton ends the season with a 3-13 overall record. Wellesley will play on the road to begin the NEWMAC tournament next Tuesday, November 5. The final NEWMAC tournament bracket and game times will be released at the conclusion of conference play on Sunday.

The Blue had to overcome a first half deficit, as junior Hannah Arkin (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) scored the first goal of the game for the Lyons with an unassisted effort 3:23 into the second period. Wellesley senior Hannah Maisano (Gambrills, Md.) was able to tie the score at 1-1 just before the half, scoring her 11th goal of the year at 29:08 after a previous attempt off the stick of junior Carson Dennis (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) was blocked in front.

The teams stayed knotted at 1-1 through the third quarter before Dennis put Wellesley ahead for the first time on the day with her team-leading 12th goal of the season midway through the fourth quarter. However, Wheaton returned the favor in fourth, when sophomore Ellie Williams (Wilbraham, Mass.) knotted the game, pouncing on a loose ball in front with 3:53 left in regulation.

Williams' third goal of the season tied the score at 2-2 and set the stage for Campbell. A bid from Dennis was blocked on the next Wellesley attack but Campbell made good on the following Blue bid, ripping a shot from the left side past Wheaton senior goalkeeper Morgan Karnes (Durham, Maine) to put the Blue ahead at the 57:31 mark of the contest. The goal would stand as Campbell's second game-winner of the season.

Karnes took the loss in the Wheaton cage (3-13) making 16 saves, while Wellesley junior goalkeeper Janelle Sullivan (Philadelphia, Pa.) earned her tenth victory of the season (10-8) with a three-save effort. Dennis had a game-high six of Wellesley's 19 shots, as the Blue finished with a 19-7 edge in total shots.
