WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Sophomore Alex Lenart (Princeton Junction, N.J.) scored her first career collegiate goal with 1:08 remaining in regulation to lift Wellesley College field hockey to a 2-1 victory over Worcester State University on Tuesday evening at Butler Stadium.

The Blue saw the start of their season postponed three times before opening the year with a victory under the Butler Stadium lights. Worcester St. drops to 4-1 overall after opening the 2021 campaign with four straight wins.

The Lancers opened the scoring a minute and a half into the second quarter when junior Molly Cutting (Auburn, Mass.) finished on a pass across the front of the goalmouth from first year Madison Avilla (Westport, Mass.). Cutting's second of the season put the Lancer's ahead for the remainder of the first half.

The Blue knotted the score after the break, with Lenart cutting across from the right side of the field to set-up junior Amy Kate Williams (Greenville, S.C.) for the game-tying goal 4:45 into the third quarter. Lenart would go on to break the deadlock in the final minutes of the fourth, making a move at the top of the circle before speeding a shot past Worcester St. sophomore goalkeeper Sam Gastonguay (Ashburnham, Mass.) to give the Blue the 2-1 win.

Gastonguay (3-1) finished the contest with five saves on seven Wellesley shots on goal. Wellesley sophomore goalkeeper Kyra Deehr-Lewis (Newtown, Pa.) made ten saves, as the Lancers finished the contest with a 17-10 advantage in shots and a 10-7 edge in shots on goal.

The Blue will host Williams in their next game on Sunday, September 19 at 2:00 PM. Worcester St. will travel to Norton to take on Wheaton (Mass.) in a 12:00 PM contest on Saturday, September 18.
