Alex Lenart Scores Game Winning Goal as the Blue Down Wheaton 2-1 in Overtime

NORTON, Mass. -- Sophomore Alex Lenart (Princeton Junction, N.J.) scored two goals including the game winner in overtime, as Wellesley snapped its two game losing streak in a 2-1 victory over Wheaton College.

Lenart finished the contest with five shots on goal and scored both goals of the game for Wellesley. Sophomore Kyra Deehr-Lewis (Newtown, Pa.) saved six out of seven shots on goal for the Blue to earn her third win. The Blue improve to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC), as Wheaton falls to 4-4 overall and 0-1 in NEWMAC play.

Both teams played a solid defensive first quarter, with Wheaton putting up the only shot of the period that was saved by Deehr-Lewis. The second quarter continued at the same pace with neither Wellesley or Wheaton firing up a shot on goal. The score would notched 0-0 heading into halftime.

After the scoreless first half, Wheaton's Ellie Williams (Wilbraham, Mass.) sent home the game's first goal. It was the third goal of the season for the senior and came off an assist from Lydia Gaudreau (Gorham, Maine). The Lyons lead 1-0 after three quarters.

Keeper Deehr-Lewis made two huge consecutive saves in the middle of the fourth period to keep the Blue down just one goal. With the pressure on and time winding down, Alex Lenart came up with a massive goal to tie the game at one a piece. The goal came unassisted and was her fourth of the year. With just 22.4 seconds remaining, Wheaton earned a penalty corner but could not capitalize as the game found its way to overtime.

In overtime, Amy Kate Williams (Greenville, S.C.) found a quality look with just over four minutes to play but missed just wide right of the net. Just a few minutes later, the clutch sophomore Alex Lenart once again found the back of the net and scored the game winner. She has assisted or scored on each goal for the Blue this season. Wellesley snapped it's losing streak and improved to 2-0 in conference play.

Wellesley returns back home for a contest with the University of New England on Wednesday, September 29, at 7:00 PM. Wheaton will host Wesleyan on Thursday, September 30, at 7:00 pm.
