No. 3 Wellesley Slated to Host No. 6 Smith in Opening Round of NEWMAC Field Hockey Championship

WESTWOOD, Mass. - With the conclusion of the last game of the regular season this evening, the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) has released the 2021 Field Hockey Championship bracket, which consists of six teams aiming for the title of NEWMAC Champion.

The Blue will host Smith College on Tuesday, November 2, with a starting time of 7:00 PM. Wellesley defeated Smith in a tight 3-2 match earlier in the season. Sophomore Alex Lenart (Princeton Junction, N.J.) scored all three goals for the Blue in the victory.

After a perfect 8-0 conference record, Babson (8-0) secured the top seed and will host a semifinal game, after a first round bye. MIT (7-1) earned the second seed and the right to host a semifinal game with a first round bye, as Wellesley (6-2) rounded out the top three as the third seed. In a head-to-head tie-break, Wheaton (4-4) emerged as the fourth seed, while WPI (4-4) earned the fifth seed. NEWMAC tie-breaking procedures were utilized to determine the final spot, as Smith (3-5) rounded out the bracket as the sixth seed. 

In the opening round, the Pioneers will be hosted by the Blue, as the WPI Engineers will take on the hosting Lyons on Tuesday, November 2nd. The winner of WPI and Wheaton will travel to the Babson Beavers on Thursday, November 4th, while the winner of Smith and Wellesley will take on the hosting MIT Engineers in semifinal action.

On Saturday, November 6th, the winners of each semifinal will compete in the NEWMAC title game.

No. 6 Smith at No. 3 Wellesley – 7:00 PM

No. 5 WPI at No. 4 Wheaton – TBA

Semifinals: Thursday, November 4th (at highest remaining seeds)

Winner No. 4/5 at No. 1 Babson  – TBA

Winner No.3/No. 6 vs. No. 2 MIT – TBA

Championship: Saturday, November 6th (at highest remaining seed)

Semifinal Winners – 1:00 p.m.
