Wellesley Field Hockey Cruises to NEWMAC Win over Wheaton, 2-1

WELLESLEY, Mass. - Sophomore Camille Newman (Manhattan, N.Y.) and classmate Rose Weseley (New York, N.Y.) provided the offense for Wellesley College field hockey as the Blue defeated New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Wheaton 2-1 on Saturday at Butler Stadium.

Newman and Weseley put the Blue (4-4 Overall, 2-0 NEWMAC) ahead by halftime and neither team would score in the second half. Senior Sophie Shekarchi (Jamestown, R.I.) scored the lone goal for the Lyons (2-7 Overall, 0-1 NEWMAC).

Shekarchi put the Lyons ahead with a goal at the 8:32 mark on a shot assisted by classmate Gabby Monfredo (Worcester, Mass.). Newman would tie the game up for the Blue by the end of the first. Early in the second quarter Weseley gave the Blue the lead on a ball assisted by junior Alex Lenart (Princeton Junction, N.J.).

The second half saw Wellesley on the attack but unable to find the back of the cage, despite outshooting Wheaton 11-0. Ceci Miller (Lewiston, Maine) put three shots on goal for the Blue while Weseley, River Schiff (Potomac, Md.), and Penny Juarez (Los Angeles, Calif.) each had their own shots on goal. Wellesley's defense stood firm and didn't allow Wheaton to put a shot on goal after the initial score.

Wellesley outshot Wheaton 26-2 and commanded the offensive flow of the game, taking nine penalty corners.

The Blue head off to the University of New England for a non-conference game with the Nor'easters on Wednesday. That game begins at 6:00 PM from the Blue Bolt Field. The Lyons return home next Saturday for a NEWMAC game against Smith College that starts at 12:00 PM.
