Cheyanne Zappala joins Wellesley field hockey as an assistant coach

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Callie Lekas, Wellesley College Head Field Hockey Coach and Assistant Professor of the Practice in the Department of Physical Education, has announced the hiring of Cheyanne Zappala as an Assistant Coach for the Blue field hockey program. Zappala officially joined the Wellesley community on September 15, 2023.

Zappala earned a degree in Psychology at Clark University in Worcester, Mass. before earning a MPA at Clark. Zappala played field hockey for the Cougars, appearing in 52 games with 27 total points during her career. At Clark, Zappala was a member of the Cougar Leadership Council, where athletes act as representatives for leadership skill building discussions with athletics community. She also volunteered at Columbus Park Elementary School in Worcester, Mass. to introduce field hockey to young girls and continue to develop skills throughout their school years.

In 2018, Zappala served as a Field Hockey Coach at Nike Overnight Summer Camp in Wolfeboro, N.H., working with kids ages 8-14. Zappala's responsibilities included implementing drills, conditioning, and training based on ability and skill level to ensure the athletes were being challenged while retaining new information and furthering their knowledge of the game.

Since 2022, Zappala has worked as a Research and Evaluation Analyst at the UMass Chan Medical School in Worcester, Mass.
