No. 6 Wellesley Field Hockey Falls to No. 3 WPI in NEWMAC Quarterfinals, 2-0

WORCESTER, Mass. – Two first quarter goals gave No. 3 seed WPI a 2-0 victory against No. 6 seed Wellesley College field hockey in the NEWMAC Quarterfinals at H. Carr Field on Tuesday.

The Engineers (10-8 Overall, 7-2 NEWMAC) now head to MIT at 6:00 PM on Thursday, November 2 for the NEWMAC Semifinals.

Senior Emily Sollecito (Bedford, Mass.) put the Engineers up 1-0 just over eight minutes into the game with a tip in off of a hit from sophomore Eve Martineau (Greene, Maine).

Roughly two minutes later, WPI sophomore Leah Uglevich (Maynard, Mass.) made it 2-0 when she scooped up a pass from junior Laura Simonian (Farmington, Conn.) and placed it in the left corner of the cage.

The Engineers outshot the Blue 8-1 in the first half. Wellesley's offense picked up the pace in the second half, with the Blue outshooting WPI 10-7, though WPI held firm on defense to keep the shutout intact thorugh the final horn. The Engineers took 10 penalty corners, while the Blue had five.

WPI junior Ella Moreau (Huntington, Mass.) and Wellesley senior Kyra Deehr-Lewis (Newtown, Pa.) each stopped two shots for their respective teams.
