Blue Salvage Split on Final Day of Spring Break

CLERMONT, Fla. -- On the final day of their spring break trip to Clermont, FL's National Training Center, the Wellesley College softball team salvaged a split. The Blue dropped the opening game to the University of Chicago, 11-3 in five innings, but came back to hold off a hot-hitting Plymouth State team, 7-5.

In game one, Wellesley held off the University of Chicago for two innings before the Maroon bats exploded. Chicago scored two runs in the third, five in the fourth and four in the fifth to pile on 11 runs. Victimized by four errors, the Blue were unable to stop the barrage of 14 Maroon hits.

Offensively for Wellesley, first-year Rachel Harris blasted a double, while Lauren Goldfarb and Megan Townsend chipped in singles.

Goldfarb took the loss, throwing three innings and allowing five earned runs.

In game two, Wellesley took an early 1-0 lead before PSU scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning to go up 3-1. Wellesley then rallied with two runs in the fourth inning and four big runs in the top of the sixth.  PSU answered with two in the bottom of the sixth, but the Blue held on for the victory.

Goldfarb went 2-4 with a double and three RBI, while Harris recorded a pinch-hit triple to lead Wellesley's offense. Sara Del Balzo added a 2-2 performance, while Kim Cabral and Sarah Schwartzmeyer each drove in runs.

In the circle, Schwartzmeyer picked up the hard-earned win. She threw seven innings, allowing 11 hits and five runs, while striking out six and walking five.

Wellesley returns to New England to take on Wheaton College on the road on Sunday in the Blue's 2011 NEWMAC opener.
