Wellesley Softball Earns Split with Babson

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Wellesley College softball team dropped the opening game of a doubleheader to Babson College, 12-2, before the nightcap was halted with the Blue up 4-3 in the top of the seventh. Game two was made up on Sunday, April 17th with the Blue earning the 4-3 win.

The loss sends Wellesley to 18-9 overall, 6-3 in the NEWMAC, while Babson's season ledger is 20-13, 8-5 in conference.

The Blue outhit the Beavers, 12-6 in game one, but a perfect storm of walks, errors and illegal pitches, combined with timely Babson hitting, vaulted the visitors to victory.

Babson struck for three runs in the top of the first, with the aid of only a single from Jess Pashos. The hosts dished out four walks, while committing a costly error to put the visitors up 3-0. The Beavers then stretched the lead to 4-0 in the third, as an RBI single from Ashleigh Phelps scored Jess Winer.

In the top of the fourth, Babson again pushed three runs across. Three straight walks from Wellesley to open the inning set up Nicole Latini's bases clearing triple that put Babson ahead, 7-0.

Wellesley would get two runs in the bottom of the seventh, as a leadoff triple from Lauren Goldfarb was singled home by Sara Del Balzo. A double from Sinta Cebrian then cut the deficit to 7-2.

Babson then struck for five unearned runs in the top of the seventh, putting the game out of reach. The Beavers only needed one hit to send five across, as two Wellesley errors came back to haunt the hosts, handing Wellesley the 12-2 loss.

Nicole Latini's three RBI led Babson in game one, while Catie Funk notched a 1-2 performance with three runs and two RBI.  Jackie Enos, Jess Winer and Ashleigh Phelps each drove in runs in the win.

In the circle for the Beavers, Christina Miguel picked up the win, throwing four and two thirds of an inning, scattering nine hits with two earned runs. Megan Brain came on in relief, pitching three and a third, allowing three hits while striking out a pair.

For Wellesley, Goldfarb and Mara Blesoff each tallied three-hit games, while Del Balzo and Cebrian drove in the lone Blue runs. In the circle, Goldfarb took the loss, allowing seven runs on five hits, with eight walks and two strikeouts.

In game two, Babson again struck first, with runs in the third and fourth innings. Back-to-back doubles from Funk and Latini made it 1-0 Beavers, while an RBI single from Pashos made it 2-0.

Wellesley countered with a two-out, four-run rally in the bottom of the fifth to take their first lead of the day, at 4-2. After strikeouts sandwiched a Kimberly Cabral single, Goldfarb sent the first pitch of her at bat over the left field fence to tie the game and spark the Wellesley rally. The Blue then strung together four straight hits, including an RBI double from Cebrian to take the lead. Babson relief pitcher, Tess Rubega would then force a ground out to end the inning.

Babson set the scene for a late comeback of its own before the game was halted due to darkness. With one out, the Beavers used four walks and a hit by pitch to get one back, before the game was called with the bases loaded and one out.
In the continuation, Wellesley first-year Lindsay Johnson came in in relief and earned a six-pitch save, giving the Blue the 4-3 win. Johnson forced a swinging strikeout and then a foul out to preserve Sarah Schwartzmeyer's win.

Wellesley returns to the field tomorrow with another NEWMAC doubleheader, originally rescheduled from April 1st. The Blue will take on MIT at 3:00pm. Babson next plays on Friday, in a non-conference doubleheader at Endicott at 3:00pm.
