Blue Softball Opens 2012 Season 2-0

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Wellesley College softball team opened the 2012 season by sweeping their first day of competition at the National Training Center's Hancock Field in Clermont, Fla. The Blue picked up a 3-0 win over William Paterson in their opener and then defeated the University of Wisconsin-Superior, 10-2 in the nightcap.

Against William Paterson, Wellesley used a three-run fourth inning and a strong pitching performance from junior Lauren Goldfarb to shut out the Pioneers. Goldfarb threw a complete-game three-hitter with three strikeouts and two walks to earn her first win of the season.

At the plate, Wellesley used a two-RBI single from Mariah Philips and an RBI single from Kimberly Cabral to account for the only runs of the game. In the fourth, Mara Blesoff and Jayne Ellis started the inning off with back-to-back singles before Samantha Spiga reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on first and second with one out. After a fly-out, Cabral and Phillips drove in the three runs with two-out singles giving Wellesley the 3-0 advantage.

Goldfarb led the offense with three hits, while Cabral and Blesoff each added two.

Against Wisconsin Superior, Wellesley cruised to a mercy-rule shortened 10-2 victory in five innings of play. Goldfarb went 3-3 with a homerun, while Ellis also added three hits, including a double and two RBI. Cabral had another great game, going 2-3 with a triple, two runs and two RBI. Taylor Yamauchi rounded out the offense with a double.

Junior Sarah Schwartzmeyer picked up the victory in the circle, throwing five innings allowing two runs on only four hits. She struck out two and walked three.

Wellesley returns to action on Monday afternoon, taking on Wesleyan and Ramapo.
